Arizona DOT uses remote-monitoring system to manage Maricopa traffic in real time

maricopa-signal-monitoringThe Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has added a wireless communication system on Arizona 347 in Maricopa that allows technicians in Phoenix to keep an eye on traffic conditions and rework the time of signals and lights to keep traffic flowing efficiently.

“We’re working to make the best use of the existing road through Maricopa and improve traffic flow and safety,” says ADOT Traffic Engineer Mark Poppe. “While drivers will experience a better commute with this new system, our work is not done. The data will allow us to continuously measure performance and make adjustments that improve mobility.”

This summer ADOT installed infrared and video cameras at each intersection of the highway running through Maricopa to give technicians visual cues. The department also monitors Wi-Fi signals from remote devices, including smartphones, to determine travel times between the intersections.

The agency is also using the system on Arizona 77 in Tucson and Phoenix, and roadways in portions of Nogales, with one planned in Safford as well. University of Arizona researchers plan to monitor the system for cost effectiveness.
