Work is ready to begin on a $666 million reconstruction of a section of Interstate 35 East in Dallas, which will involve no toll lanes.

The Southern Gateway project is estimated to take four years to rebuild and widen I-35E and U.S. Highway 67 in southern Dallas County, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. State and city officials gathered February 28 for a groundbreaking ceremony.

The project is part of the Texas Clear Lanes initiative to reduce congestion and cut commute times in metro areas, with non-tolled transportation solutions. I-35E is the state’s 17th-most congested road segment.

The 11-mile project will be done in two segments:

  • The I-35E portion, which includes full reconstruction and widening to include five general purpose lanes in each direction and two reversible, non-tolled express lanes from Colorado Boulevard to US 67.
  • The U.S. 67 portion, which adds a third general purpose lane in each direction from I-35E to I-20. The existing concurrent U.S. 67 HOV lane will be rebuilt to become one reversible, non-tolled express lane in the center median.

The project is expected to be completed by late 2021, TxDOT says. The contractor is Pegasus Link Constructors Inc., which is a joint venture between Balfour Beatty and Fluor.
