20,000 Washington residents expected to celebrate Walk to School Day

WTSD_6inch_ColorThe Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced Monday that it estimates 20,000 students, parents, teachers and community leaders in Washington will participate in International Walk to School Day on Wednesday.

Walk to School Day is celebrated to encourage students to try walking or biking to school rather than driving or riding in a motor vehicle.

WSDOT said it encourages walking and biking to school year-round with its Safe Routes to School program, which has awarded $55 million for 140 safety-improving projects in the last eight years.

Walk to School celebrations are not limited to those in Washington. About 3,200 schools across the U.S. will likely participate in International Walk to School Month, which lasts the entire month of October.
