Thanks to funds provided by SB-1, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) reports that it completed a $1.8 billion project that improved nine bridges in five Sacramento Valley counties. The project included a coating on the concrete bridge decks to protect the road surface and extend the life of the pavement.

“This proactive maintenance work preserves these bridges for years to come,” said Caltrans Director Laurie Berman, in a press release. “SB 1 has made it possible for us to save taxpayers millions of dollars in costly future road repairs.”

The following nine bridges received improvements through the project:

  • Interstate 5/Lurline Ave. overcrossing in Colusa County.
  • I-5/Fairview Road overcrossing in Colusa County.
  • I-5/County Road 68 overcrossing in Glenn County.
  • Westbound I-80 to southbound I-5 connector in Sacramento.
  • I-80/North Ave. overcrossing in Sacramento.
  • I-80/Dry Creek Road overcrossing in Sacramento.
  • State Route 20 Meridian Bridge in Sutter and Colusa counties.
  • SR-99/West Riego Road overcrossing in Sutter County.
  • SR-65/SR-70 Connector in Yuba County.

“Many of these bridges are crucial routes for daily commuters and commercial freight carriers traveling throughout the Sacramento Valley region,” said Caltrans District 3 Director Amarjeet S. Benipal in the press release. “For example, more than 26,000 vehicles a day use the westbound I-80 connector to southbound I-5 to reach downtown Sacramento’s business, government and entertainment districts.”

Caltrans says SB 1 funds will enable it to repair more than 17,000 lane miles of pavement, 500 bridges, and 55,000 culverts by 2027.
