Volvo CE president says SCR will be primary Tier 4 Final solution

Volvo Construction Equipment will primarily use SCR technology as its Tier 4 Final approach, said Pat Olney, president of Volvo Construction Equipment, today at the Bauma trade show in Munich, Germany.
“We’re pleased to say we’re able to achieve 5 percent additional fuel efficiency with our Final approach,” said Olney.
The DEF (or urea) tank on each machine will be sized proportionally with the diesel tank, to maintain the correct DEF-to-fuel ratio. “In most cases, we’ll be using passive regeneration,” he said.
For engines 75 horsepower and greater, Volvo will use a combination of in-cylinder and external solutions, in addition to SCR. “We know SCR technology,” said Olney. “Volvo Trucks has used it since 2005.”
In addition, Volvo says it has recorded more than 20,000 hours of SCR testing in off-road machines, including wheel loaders, excavators and articulated haulers.
Volvo says it will use SCR in addition to a diesel particulate filter and exhaust gas recirculation developed during Tier 4 Interim. In its Final approach, Volvo will use an updated DPF that operates with advanced electronic control technologies and increased passive regeneration.
The Volvo stand at Bauma features its new ECR25D, ECR58D and ECR88D short radius compactors, and the P6870C asphalt paver.
