Virginia DOT to improve driver safety on portions of I-77

VDOT_LogoVirginia Governor Terry McAuliffe announced Monday that the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will improve driver safety on Interstate 77 in the Fancy Gap area of Carroll County by building a new safety system.

The $7.5 million Active Traffic and Safety Management System (ATSMS), which features technology including electronic signs and cameras, will be designed and built by Springfield-based G4S Technology.

The system provide road and weather condition information on a 12-mile mountainous stretch of I-77. It will be able to monitor the weather, establish variable speed limits based on weather and traffic conditions, inform drivers of changing conditions and provide surveillance of the corridor by VDOT’s traffic operations center.

The project is expected to be completed in summer 2015.
