(Photo: MDOT)The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) on Wednesday launched a statewide safety campaign that features traffic signs displaying the number of traffic fatalities on Michigan roadways.
The campaign, “Toward Zero Deaths,” is an MDOT effort “to influence driver behavior and improve safety.” It builds on the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) campaign, “Toward Zero Deaths: A National Strategy on Highway Safety.”
The Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), located on various I, M and US routes, will display the fatality messages once a month, informing travellers the year-to-date number of traffic deaths in the state. The signs will switch to higher-priority messages–including incident messages lane closuresm shoulder closures and work zone messages–when necessary.
Nine other agencies, including the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), are posting fatality messages on their state roadways.
