It might be the most wonderful time of the year, but the joy of the holiday season doesn’t necessarily roll over onto the highways across the country. But drivers in Virginia can at least plan for their travels with the state’s 511 system.

Through 511Virginia.org, the free 511 app or by calling 5-1-1, people driving across the state can find out if winter weather has made some roads more dangerous, or check the traffic to find the best route to their destinations.

“The Christmas and New Year’s holidays are busy times for travel each year,” VDOT Commissioner Charlie Kilpatrick said in a press release. “Motorists should plan ahead, drive safely and take a break when needed to ensure they reach their destination safely to enjoy the holiday.”

VDOT is also planning to suspend most of the highway work projects across the state in order to keep the roads clear.
