The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) is conducting a webinar April 1 on the New York City Department of Transportation’s (NYCDOT) connected vehicle pilot program. This is the first in a series of three webinars on the program and will cover the “Concept of Operations” phase.

The webinar will cover issues to be addressed at the deployment of the program and “insights” gained from “stakeholder engagement activities during the concept development phase.”

The Federal Highway Administration’s Jonathan Walker, a transportation research specialist with the agency’s Office of Transportation Management, and NYCDOT Project Manager Steve Galgano, will serve as presenters during the webinar, schedule for 1-2 p.m. EDT.

USDOT’s Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office is sponsoring the Connected Vehicle Pilot Deployment Program, which aims to “combine connected vehicle and mobile device technologies in innovative and cost-effective ways.” The ultimate goal is to “improve traveler mobility and system productivity while reducing environmental impacts and enhancing safety.”

New York is one of three pilot sites for the program, which also includes the state Wyoming and Tampa, Florida.

New York wants to use the program to improve traveler and pedestrian safety in the city via vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technology, an effort that also aligns with the city’s Vision Zero initiative. Vision Zero aims to limit crashes and pedestrian fatalities and increase traveler safety in “all modes of transportation.”

NYCDOT’s deployment includes plans to install connected vehicle technology in roughly 250 intersections in Midtown Manhattan and central Brooklyn to communicate with up to 10,000 vehicles equipped with after-market safety devices.
