USDOT offers webinar series on Connected Vehicles Pilot Deployment Program

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is offering three webinars covering technical assistance for the Connected Vehicles Pilot Deployment Program.

“The Connected Vehicles Pilot Deployment Program seeks to combine connected vehicle and mobile device technologies in innovative and cost-effective ways,” USDOT’s ITS Joint Program Office says. “Ultimately, this program will improve traveler mobility and system productivity while reducing environmental impacts and enhancing safety. The USDOT has selected three pilot sites, where teams are in the process of conducting Phase 1 Concept Development activities in order to move towards deployment and operations phases.”

Preparing a Safety Management Plan for Connected Vehicle Deployments

Presenter: John Harding, Intelligent Technologies Research, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
Details:
This webinar will present the USDOT perspective on the development of a Safety Management Plan, a key step in the concept development phase for deployment planning. John Harding of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will describe the design concept and the requirements of a Safety Management Plan, which will address the underlying safety needs associated with the safety of all travelers, subjects, and other personnel associated with connected vehicle deployments. Note that Safety Management planning is critical, yet different from Safety Evaluation. The purpose of Safety Evaluation is to evaluate safety impacts/benefits, while the purpose of the Safety Management Plan is to define approaches/processes for the identification and management/ minimization of the inherent safety risks associated with connected vehicle deployments.

Preparing a Security Operational Concept for Connected Vehicle Deployments

Presenter: Kevin Gay, Program Manager, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

This webinar will present the USDOT perspective on the development of a Security Operational Concept, a key step in the concept development phase for deployment planning. Kevin Gay of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will describe the design concept and the requirements of a Security Operational Concept, which will address the underlying needs of the connected vehicle deployments to ensure secure operations and to protect the privacy of vehicle and device owners.  A key component of the Security Operational Concept will be the Security Credential and Management System (SCMS).

Preparing an Institutional/Business Model and Financial Sustainability for Connected Vehicle Deployments

This webinar will present the USDOT perspective on the development of a Partnership Coordination and Finalization Plan, a key step in the concept development phase for deployment planning. Brian Cronin of the ITS Joint Program Office will describe the concept and the requirements of a Partnership Coordination and Finalization Plan to ensure that partnership coordination and finalization occur properly.  The existing, desired, and implemented institutional framework and business approaches need to be addressed along with the technical tasks, the performance evaluation, and ways to achieve financial sustainability.
