An underride guard is the metal assembly on the rear bumper of most large trucks. This required part is intended to provide protection to nearby vehicles by preventing cars from sliding beneath the trailer.
However, the coalition argues that the guards don’t offer enough protection. The group, along with crash victims and families of crash victims, is pushing for federal transportation officials and lawmakers to make the guards safer.
The coalition’s goal is to have Congress draft legislation that includes an added requirement for side guards as well as regulations for strengthened rear guards.
