New smart memory alloy designed to replace rebar in bridges as earthquake reinforcement
Researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Okanagan have developed smart memory alloys for use in concrete bridges in earthquake-prone areas that they say are safer and more cost-effective than steel rebar. “Conventional steel rebar reinforcements have been used for years in building structurally sound bridges,” said Shahria Alam, associate professor of engineering and […]

Scientists test new earthquake resistant bridge designs
Saiid Saiidi, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno, served as project leader in testing new bridge designs with connectors that he says can better withstand violent temblors and help speed reconstruction after a major quake causes damage, the Montreal Gazette reports. Scientists conducted tests using a “shake table” to […]

Caltrans proposes seismic retrofits for bridges in Sacramento region
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is proposing seismic retrofits for three bridges in the Sacramento region: the Mokelumne River Bridge, the North Sacramento Undercrossing Bridge and the Paintersville drawbridge, Capitol Public Radio reports. Caltrans says the bridges are safe, but they don’t meet current requirements for withstanding earthquakes. Dennis Keaton with Caltrans, told the news agency that the project must first […]

How this carbon fiber donut quickly repairs bridges damaged by earthquakes
Researchers at the University of Utah say they have developed a method that not only greatly reduces the amount of time it takes to repair bridges damaged in earthquakes, but also can provide reinforcement against such damages on bridges that have not yet been impacted. The process, developed by a team of researchers led by U of […]

70-foot-long bridge survives series of earthquakes
A 70-foot-long, 52-ton bridge was tried and tested by the University of Nevada, Reno’s new Earthquake Engineering Lab. The experiment was to see if the bridge would survive a series of 10 earthquakes – and it did! “It was a complete success. The bridge withstood the design standard very well and today went over and above […]

Oklahoma DOT looks to Caltrans for bridge assessment advice
Bridges across the nation are aging, with many now well past their projected life spans. Oklahoma’s bridges are among those aging structures. In the “Better Bridges 2013 Bridge Inventory,” Better Roads reported that 14 percent of the state’s 7,664 bridges were either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. Add that recent seismic activity, which, according to a […]

Japanese companies develop 300-ton pendulums that reduce swaying in skyscrapers during earthquakes
Two Japanese companies have developed giant pendulums they say, when installed atop a skyscraper, can shorten vibrations and reduce swaying caused by earthquakes by as much as 60 percent. Mitsui Fudosan, a real estate developer, and construction firm Kajima developed a 300-ton pendulum that, according to a report from CNET, “will act as a counterweight […]

Buffalo researchers to test how NYC’s old brownstones would fair in an earthquake
For years, folks in New York City gave little thought to natural disasters. That sort of thing simply didn’t happen there. But these days, Mother Nature is anything but predictable and Superstorm Sandy showed a large-scale, deadly natural disaster can happen absolutely anywhere. With that and a 2011 earthquake in Virginia that shook the East […]
