A drive on a Texas high-speed toll road: Is this how everybody will drive in the future? I hope not.
Over the holidays I had the opportunity to travel south on the newest Texas toll road, otherwise known as State Highway 130. The 131-mile road was built to ease Austin’s crushing traffic burdens, particularly along Interstate 35, but controversy has dogged the project since the road opened. The financing for SH 130 has always been […]

Provision in WRRDA would boost P3s for water projects
The $12.3 billion Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) that was recently approved by the House and Senate would boost public-private partnerships (P3s), and those P3s are getting mixed reviews, The Hill reports. A water infrastructure advocacy group, Boston, Mass.-based Corporate Accountability International’s (CAI) Public Water Works! campaign, said Tuesday it is concerned about the […]

NACo report finds county transportation project funding ‘increasingly inadequate’
A report released Monday by the National Association of Counties (NACo) finds that “federal and state funding for county transportation projects is increasingly inadequate.” The report, “The Road Ahead: County Transportation Funding and Financing,” which focuses on county-owned roads and bridges, notes that counties build and maintain 45 percent of public roads and 230,690 bridges […]

P3s win in Virginia Supreme Court case
The decision by the Virginia Supreme Court to uphold the state’s public-private partnership (P3s) in the case of Elizabeth River Crossings OPCO, LLC and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) v. Danny Meeks should be applauded. The state Supreme Court decision overruled a lower court’s decision to strike down Virginia’s Public Private Transportation Act. The American […]

Senate Commerce Committee to meet Tuesday about private transportation funding
The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee will meet Tuesday to discuss potential private sector sources of transportation infrastructure funding, according to a report from The Hill. Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-W. Va.) said Tuesday that lawmakers need to make a bipartisan effort to put in place transportation funding. “Congress has shown neither […]

Mexico Paving a Road to Nowhere
As the saying goes, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” And repeat it they will if Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto follows through with his $100 billion infrastructure program. A first-class highway expansion is currently under construction through Tepoztlán, which could mean great things for Mexico’s commerce – if it […]

Just Don’t Use That Filthy ‘T’ Word
Ten years ago, the brightest guy in the room couldn’t solve the problem of aging roads and bridges without raising taxes and the only thing that has changed since then is that thousands of bridges and tens of thousands of highways bases are 10 years older.

VDOT considers 10 public-private partnership projects
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is considering 10 transportation projects as candidates for public-private partnerships. Governor Bob McDonnell yesterday released the state’s Public-Private Partnerships’ (“OTP3”) Draft 2013 Virginia PPTA Pipeline, which contains the P3 candidate projects as well as 10 conceptual projects. The P3 candidate projects are ready to be moved through the screening […]

Corporate road sponsorships coming to New Jersey
It had to happen. Funding for our transportation infrastructure is inadequate, to use a nice word, and states and any other agencies responsible for our bridges and roads are going to have to continue to find and mine almost any source they can think of. So New Jersey is set to allow corporate sponsorships of […]

Private money: A funding wildcard in 2014
It’s hard to see a time in the foreseeable future where we will have a solid supply of funding from any single source to fill the Highway Trust Fund (HTF). That’s an asterisked statement of course because an increased gas tax could do it. But that won’t happen in the foreseeable future. And neither will […]

Where Interstate 20 crosses Interstate Bob
Are we approaching an intersection, where Public Street and Private Road meet? And if we are, is that intersection a confusing place in need of significant upgrading if it is to benefit the traveling public? Yep. Public-private partnerships created to profitably build and operate/manage transportation infrastructure (i.e. roads and bridges) appear to be on the […]

Indiana’s Cline Ave. new toll bridge completely financed with private funds
Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and East Chicago Mayor Anthony Copeland announced an agreement in principle with United Bridge Partners, a team of FIGG Bridge Companies, Lane Construction Corp. and American Infrastructure MLP Funds, to build a new toll bridge entirely with private funds in the footprint of the unsafe Cline Avenue structure.
