The competition, sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, recognizes transportation projects in three main categories: “Ahead of Schedule,” “Under Budget” and “Best Use of Innovation.” The projects were also ranked by size: small category (projects that cost less than $25 million), medium category (projects costing between $25-$200 million) and large category (projects that cost  more than $200 million).

Twelve transportation projects were nominated.

The following projects received awards:

  • I-465/Allisonville Road Interchange Reconstruction Project: Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) – Ahead of Schedule category, small

  • Safe and Sound Bridge Improvement Program: Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) – Ahead of Schedule category, large

  • Highway 169/I-494 Interchange Reconstruction Project: Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) – Under Budget category, medium

  • I-69 Evansville to Indianapolis Corridor (Sections 1-3) Project: INDOT – Under Budget category, large

  • Main Street Makeover (M-150) Project: Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) – Best Use of Innovation category, small

  • Shared Four-Lane Highway Project: MoDOT – Best Use of Innovation category, medium

The winners in the southern and western regions will be announced later this summer.

The 10 projects with the highest overall scores will compete for the Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award. A panel of transportation experts will choose the Grand Prize winner, while the People’s Choice Award will go to the transportation project that receives the most online votes from the public.

Online voting begins September 4. Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award winners will be announced at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in Denver in October.
