The steel truss bridge over the Wapsipinicon River in Black Hawk County, Iowa, will likely be closed until spring because a piling is sinking into the ground, according to news reports.
Heavy trucks reportedly were driven over the bridge, which has an 8-ton weight limit, on East Bennington Road in the Bruggeman Wildlife Area, causing a corner of it to sag, according to The Courier newspaper. The railing is also loose, and a piling is sinking into the river causing the bridge to dip, reports KWWL TV news.
The bridge, which was built in 1945, has been closed since September 28. It is 137 feet long and 16 feet wide, and it is the last such steel truss bridge in Black Hawk County.
County engineers are assessing whether to replace or repair the bridge, according to news reports.
