2013 Ram 1500 [1]

Chrysler announced earlier this year that the 2014 Ram 1500 would be the first modern half-ton pickup with a diesel option.

The news that Ford, Chevrolet and Ram, in that order, hold the top three spots for pickup sales for March shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.

However, as Truck Trend points out in its roundup of how each automaker fared over the year between March 2012 and March 2013, the numbers indicate that an upset may be brewing.

Ram Truck sales increased a whopping 25 percent year-over-year to 33,831 units sold. More importantly, the separation between Ram and Chevrolet’s Silverado was only 6,000 units.

Truck Trend rightly points out that the redesigned 2014 Silverados launching later this year [2]may give Chevy a bit of breathing room in this race. However, Ram has its own big launch in the pipeline with the highly-anticipated diesel option in the 2014 Ram 1500—the first modern half-ton diesel. [3]

Of course, Ford remains comfortably ahead of everyone with its own successful year. Ford’s F-Series trucks saw an uptick in sales of 16.3 percent to 67,513. The top 5 trucks from Truck Trend’s ranking is below.

  1. Ford F-Series: Up 16.3 percent to 67,513 units sold
  2. Chevy Silverado: Up 8.4 percent to 39,561 units sold
  3. Ram Trucks 1500/2500/3500: Up 25 percent to 33,831 units sold
  4. Toyota Tacoma: Up 21.2 percent to 15,201 units sold
  5. GMC Sierra: Down 0.2 percent to 13,817 units sold
