Product report: Bergkamp M310 and M2 Series

The slurry seal/microsufacing process gives roadways a smooth new asphalt-based surface from 1/8- to 3/8-inch thick while leveling ruts, raveling and other minor surface deteration plus improving texture and skid resistance. Slurry seal/microsurfacing can extend the life of roads up to seven years, yet costs a fraction of a full overlay.

The process uses specialized truck- or trailer-mounted units with a built in pug mill that mixes finely crushed aggregate (Type I to Type III) with asphalt emulsion, water and additives. After being mixed the product is applied to the pavement with a spreader box that acts much like a screed as the truck is driven forward in a one-pass application.

Bergkamp’s newest slurry seal/microsurfacing paver, the M310, carries 10 cubic yards of aggregate, 600 gallons of asphalt emulsion and water and 80 gallons of additive. It uses an EMCAD system (electronic mix control and diagnostic) that displays current and average material ratios, total material used and material rates, and it cranks out on-demand reports via an on-board printer.

The calibration on the M310 is simplified by the EMCAD system and manual calculations are eliminated. The system calibrates the ratios of all the components in the mix with an electronic signal and maintains those ratios with feedback loops, making it easier for less experienced operators to make adjustments without compromising the accuracy of the mix.

A Roper gear pump, three-way valve and inline strainer allow trouble free loading of asphalt emulsion onto the truck without affecting production settings. A 99-horsepower Cummins diesel engine powers the unit. The operator interface has joystick controls and slides to either side for optimum visibility. The pugmill slides out for easy cleaning, and all liquid tanks are removable for maintenance.

Bergkamp also offers the M2 series of slurry seal/microsurfacing units: the M206, which carries 6 cubic yards of aggregate and 300 gallons of asphalt emulsion and water; and the M210 with 10 cubic yards of aggregate capacity and 600 gallons of asphalt emulsion and water. Both come with 55-gallon steel additive tanks and get their power from 100-horsepower Cummins diesel engines. Emulsion ratios on the M2 series are regulated as it is pumped by the 3-inch gear pump into the pugmill. A variable-speed, dual-shaft multi-paddle pugmill on these pavers has a dual hydraulic drive, which provides even mixture and coating of the aggregate.

All of the Bergkamp units deliver aggregate to the pugmill with a belt-over-chain conveyor, a design that eliminates slippage, and steep hopper walls to prevent bridging problems.
