Paving a parking lot: The Rollers

BOMAG BW138AD

Our sister publication, Equipment World, is featuring a story about rollers used for paving parking lots. It’s the second of a two-part series entitled “What it takes to pave a parking lot.”

The article uses the same hypothetical parking lot and requirements mentioned in part one of the series: 250,000 square feet with some islands, landscaping and decorative pavers; 3,500 to 4,000 tons of dense-graded asphalt paved at 3 inches thick; a complete base that consists of 6 inches of aggregate base course; an average paving speed; and the asphalt leaves the plant at 300 to 325 degrees F.

The article discusses several roller options, including Bomag’s BW278 AD, Cat’s CD54B with split drums, Hamm’s tandem HD O70V-S, Case’s DV207HF double drum asphalt roller, Volvo’s DD24, Sakai’s SW652ND roller and more, noting which specs to consider when choosing a roller.
