Georgia’s State Transportation Board approved North Perimeter Contractors for the design, construction and partial financing of the I-285/SR 400 Reconstruction Project, which at one time would have been the most expensive transportation project for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) at $1.1 billion.

Four contractors were competing for the project.

North Perimeter Contractors’ winning bid was for $460 million. The final project cost, including all design work, approvals, land acquisitions, utility relocations, finance charges, bonding and insurance, construction engineering and inspection, will come to $679 million.

North Perimeter Contractors is made up of Ferrovial, Louis Berger and Neel-Schaffer Inc.

“There is still work to be done before reaching a final agreement, but we have certainly accomplished a major objective by identifying the group we intend to move forward with on delivering this important project to the community,” says GDOT Commissioner Russell McMurry.

“It is crucial to note that this has been a team effort, and is only possible due to our partnerships with the Governor’s Office, State Road and Tollway Authority, Federal Highway, Perimeter Community Improvement Districts, local governments along the corridor and many more that have provided assistance and support. This is a great example of a Public Private Partnership bringing value to the citizens of Georgia by letting private sector innovation and financing build a better project.”

The project will involve 10.5 miles of roadway and includes rebuilding the I-285/SR 400 Interchange as well as improvements to I-285 west from Roswell Road in Fulton County to east of Ashford-Dunwoody Road in DeKalb County, and improvements to SR 400 from the Glenridge Connector to Spalding Drive.

Set to be completed by mid-2020, the project is expected to save the average commuter 8 hours per year and to cut more than 20,000 hours a day in delays for all users of the interchange.
