Shorter in length than their predecessors, the new Trimble Spectra Precision DG613 and DG813 pipe lasers work well in space-constrained environments such as manholes with precast inverts and a tight radius.

DG stands for DialGrade and this new generation of lasers have a grade range from -12 to +40 percent and are fully self-leveling over the entire grade range. The cross axis is also fully compensated for quick set up and to insure that the laser will be level without having to manually rotate it in the invert.

With a working range of 500 feet, the lasers provide a single setup to lay pipe from one manhole to the next. An RC803 remote control device uses infrared communications when in the pipe. In over-the-top sites the remote uses radio communication to reach a distance of 430 feet.

With the rechargeable NiMH batteries you get 40 hours of operation and you can boost that to 50 hours with alkaline batteries. A 12-volt adaptor is available for charging the NiMH batteries in a vehicle.

If someone happens to kick or jostle one of the units, a line alert function will cause the beam to blink, notifying the operator that the laser setup has been disturbed. With the line set function the beam can be moved up to 100 percent grade in a few seconds. The line scan function allows the user to quickly align the beam to the pipe laying target’s center, which is placed in the last piece of pipe.

The DG813 has a few additional features including a Spot Align feature to align the beam to the center of the Spot Finder, a Spot Match used to check that the pipe has been installed to the correct grade and the SpotLoc to lock the beam in a desired position. The DG613 and DG813 will be available in mid-February 2016.
