The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is requesting students submit applications for its Youth Development and Mentoring Program (YDMP), which aims to provide students with “opportunities to pursue higher education, personal growth and transportation careers”.
The program is a partnership with the Federal Highway Administration and the positions offer hourly wages.
The YDMP offers MDOT facility site visits, construction site tours, education institution tours, participation in college and career fairs and “practical, hands-on experiences that will provide opportunities and exposure to various aspects of transportation”.
MDOT says the training and mentoring part of the program will help students develop better communication skills, leadership qualities and awareness of career opportunities in the transportation field.
The Michigan Civil Service Commission also offers options for on-site career planning and resume writing to participants at each region office. Mentoring sessions also will be available to cover college readiness planning, personal finance and accounting, job interviewing and participation in activities at private engineering firms specifically tailored to introduce surveying, concrete testing and analysis and civil engineering.
Applicants must be 16, have a 2.5 GPA and have a recommendation letter from a school official. MDOT is paying between $9 and $12.50 per hour for team member and team leader positions. More information is available at www.michigan.gov/mdot-ydmp.
