An 18-year-old man who shot an Iowa Department of Transportation officer was sentenced to 12 years in prison Monday.

According to KCCI, Chauncy Jewett was being pursued by Iowa DOT officer Derek Floerchinger on Interstate 29. The DOT officer saw Jewett lean his head out of his car during the chase and then he heard something hit his own vehicle. It was later determined that Jewett shot at Floerchinger’s vehicle; the officer wasn’t injured.

Jewett continued to flee after shooting Floerchinger’s car but was arrested near Missouri Valley after he lost control of the stolen vehicle and was forced to continue on foot.

Jewett, a Sioux City native, pled guilty in August to intimidation with a dangerous weapon and carrying weapons.
