Although the details are sketchy, the Swedish car company Cargines has developed a new engine that uses pneumatics to control the valves [1]. This results in lower carbon dioxide emissions and improved fuel efficiency according to the reports.

Diesel engine manufacturers have long dreamed of replacing camshafts with an electronic actuator, but have yet to come up with something electronic that can take the abuse that a hardened steel camshaft endures for hundreds of thousands of miles.
