Komatsu PC290LC-11 hydraulic excavator

Komatsu today introduced an update to its PC290LC long-arm hydraulic excavator. The new PC290LC-11 replaces the -10 model, is outfitted with a Tier 4 Final engine and boasts fuel economy, hydraulic system and cab improvements.

The machine has an operating weight between 66,359 and 68,122 pounds and is built atop a large Komatsu PC360 undercarriage for greater stability. The machine features a long arm and boom and is powered by a 196-horsepower Komatsu SAA6D107E-3 engine.

The Tier 4 Final engine integrates selective catalyst reduction (SCR) and reduces emissions using diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). The engine incorporates an electronic control system to manage airflow rate, fuel injection, combustion parameters, and after treatment functions. Meanwhile, Komatsu’s variable geometry turbocharger (KVGT) and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve manage temperature and air management control.

The PC290LC-11’s hydraulic system is a fully-integrated design that Komatsu has tweaked to reduce hydraulic loss. The system uses a closed center load sensing hydraulic system with Variable Speed Matching technology allowing the engine speed to adjust based on the hydraulic pump output for both light and heavy-duty applications.

The machine’s cab is mounted on viscous isolation dampers that limit low vibration levels inside. A redesigned, heated, air suspension high-back seat comes standard with fully adjustable armrests. A radio is also standard along with an auxiliary input for connecting a smartphone or other music device to play through the cab’s stereo speakers. The cab also features two 12-volt power outlets.

A 7-inch monitor allows the operator to quickly switch between the machine’s six working modes and provides easy access to information on DEF fluid level, ECO guidance, operational records, fuel consumption history and utilization information.  The monitor gives a view directly behind the machine thanks to a standard wide-angle rearview camera.

Joysticks with proportional controls for operating attachments are an available option.

In terms of serviceability, this new PC290LC has guardrails on both sides of the upper structure for easier access. Plus, the radiator and hydraulic oil cooler are mounted side by side, making it easier to maintain and service these two components. The machine is also equipped with both the Komtrax telematics system and Komatsu’s Equipment Management Monitoring System, and it comes with Komatsu Care complimentary scheduled maintenance for 3 years or 2,000 hours.

Komtrax allows for remote access via a computer, smartphone or tablet to fuel levels, operating hours, location, cautions and maintenance alerts, DEF levels, ambient air temperatures and pressures.  The telematics system also features a new operator identification system that reports data on up to 100 operators. Plus, a new Auto Idle Shutdown reduces unnecessary idle time. The Equipment Management Monitoring System assists operators and technicians in troubleshooting by continuously monitoring all critical systems.
