Komatsu has updated its PC650 excavator with improvements to the machine’s cab design, fuel efficiency and serviceability.

With operating weights between 140,456 and 145,284 pounds, the new PC650LC-11 is powered by a 436-horsepower Komatsu SAA6D140E-7 engine. The engine employs a selective catalyst reduction (SCR) system and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to meet Tier 4 Final emissions standards and features a variable geometry turbocharger and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) for more precise temperature and air management control and longer component life.

“The PC650LC-11 is matched perfectly for high-production loading of 30-40 ton trucks, and well suited for deep sewer and water trenching applications,” says Komatsu product marketing manager Justin Lantin. “It is also designed to accommodate flexible job operations that require frequent transportation with reduced time required for disassembly.”

This excavator features an integrated hydraulic system design with center load sensing that works with three working modes to quickly match machine performance to the application at hand. The hydraulics also drive a reversible cooling fan which varies speed in response to coolant, hydraulic oil and ambient air temperatures.

Inside the cab, operators will find a heated air suspension high back seat with fully adjustable armrests, a radio with auxiliary input for connecting MP3 players and smartphones and 12-volt power ports. The cab also features a monitor panel that displays DEF level, ecology guidance, operational records, fuel consumption history and more.

A new display combines machine information with a wide landscape view from the standard rearview camera.

Operators can also configure an Auto Idle Shutdown feature.

Komatsu has also improved maintenance and service access on the PC650LC-11. The upper structure features handrails on both sides. A large 16.4 gallon DEF tank is easy to reach inside a lockable compartment and the radiator and hydraulic oil coolers are mounted side by side for easier access. Finally, a standard 24-volt lubrication pump with hose reel eases grease-fitting maintenance.
