With tracked counterparts having launched with a larger and more feature-rich cab in the fall of last year, Hyundai used the Bauma trade show in Munich to introduce two wheeled excavators which share many of those HX Series features.

The HW140 and HW210 replace the 9A Series R140W and R210W, respectively, and are powered by a 6-cylinder CUmmins QSB6.7 engine.

The HW140 weighs in at 30,600 pounds and, thanks to the new Tier 4 Final engine, is up to 15 percent more fuel efficient in truck loading and leveling applications, Hyundai says. The HW210 is 46,750 lbs. and benefits from a 20-percent boost in fuel efficiency in truck loading and leveling.

These HW series machines feature a new exterior design Hyundai says is tougher and safer than its predecessors. That includes a new cab which boasts lower noise and vibration levels and a more ergonomic layout.

These wheeled excavators now feature the same 8-inch touchscreen display and control cluster found in the HX Series machines. This display is 30 percent larger than those found on the 9A Series machines and is where operators can check in on fuel consumption, the ECO Gauge (which guides operators toward more fuel-friendly habits), and the Power and Intelligent Power Control (IPC) modes.

Hyundai says the three-stage Power mode maxes out power for high performance across all applications while IPC acts a bit like an ECO mode, optimizing power based on the demand of the load.

For finer control of the machines, Swing Lock, which maintains stability when swing movement needs to be limited, and Fine Swing control are available options.

The touchscreen also displays views from Hyundai’s Advanced Around View Monitoring System which gives operators a 360-degree view of the jobsite around the machine. Incorporated into that view is moving object detection which warns the operator with audible and visual warnings when people and objects move with in 16.5 feet of the machine. The HW excavators also get Hyundai’s new haptic controller. This joystick-like nub is located just behind the right joystick and is very similar to the touch-sensitive nubs found in newer luxury cars. It’s used as an alternative method of input for the new monitor and much more.

The HW series machines are equipped with the Hi-Mate telematics service which allows remote monitoring of machine performance and diagnostics along with location updates and the ability to create geofences which prevent a machine from leaving a defined location.
