E-Verify continues to gain users and more state support, while updating its program.
Although a voluntary program for most employers, E-Verify requires federal contractors and subcontractors to verify employees’ eligibility to work in the United States. Some states, such as Arizona and Mississippi, require most employers to participate in the E-Verify program.
With more states requiring employers to use E-Verify, it updated areas of the program. E-Verify redesigned its Web Interface in June to enhance its usability, security, accuracy and efficiency. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services also redesigned the Permanent Resident Card, making it green again.
The program has three new civil rights initiatives: videos for employees and employers, a memorandum of understanding between USCIS and the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division and a telephone number to respond to employee inquiries.
More than 212,000 employers are enrolled in the program, with more than 12 million queries run through the system in the 2010 fiscal year as of July.
