Kenworth T880 trucks are now available with the Hendrickson ULTIMAAX severe-duty rubber suspension. This configuration, announced at the Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, is designed to aid in ride quality and stability in rugged terrain situations.

“The severe-duty suspension helps enhance the T880’s traction, stability and handling under loads from 46,000 to 52,000 pounds. Plus, it adds even more durability and helps customers maintain a lower cost of operation with its components designed for maximum weight savings for additional payload,” says Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director.

The ULTIMAXX design includes bar pin end bushings, a progressive load spring design and a heavy-duty axle connection. The load spring is designed for simplified replacement and the axle connection aims to cut down on re-bush time.

To create a smoother ride when not carrying a load, Hendrickson incorporated rubber shear springs to carry a majority of vertical load. When carrying a load, the ride and stability characteristics of the suspension adjust without “an abrupt change” in spring load.

“The rubber shear springs also contribute to longer service life for the T880 and the body equipment,” Swihart says.

Hendrickson also added its equalizing beam technology that uses a central pivot point to keep tires in contact with the road or worksite surface to maintain traction. It also offers up to 17.5 inches of diagonal wheel articulation to maintain load on all drive wheels.

“By equipping the Kenworth T880 with the ULTIMAAX severe-duty suspension, customers can greatly enhance the driver-friendly T880, making it an even more productive work environment, ultimately resulting in the attraction and retention of good drivers,” Swihart adds.
