GM’s latest recall on 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra pickups due to steering issue; warns “Do not drive”

General Motors has issued yet another recall on its 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, this time for a steering issue that could cause a sudden crash.

The recall affects 477 2014 Silverados, Sierras and 2015 Chevrolet Tahoes and centers around a manufacturing error. GM says the “tie road threaded attachment to the steering gear rack in these vehicles may not be tightened to specification.”

GM says it has learned that the tie rod can separate from the steering rack, causing a crash with little warning.

GM overnighted letters to the affected customers on May 14. Though the recall size is relatively small, the defect is extremely dangerous and GM is telling all affected customers to not drive these trucks in for the required service.

They’re instead being urged to have their trucks towed in to a dealership where the inner tie rods will be inspected to make sure they are tightened correctly and the steering gear will be replaced if necessary.

GM says concerned customers can call 1-800-222-1020 for more information on the recall.

This is the fourth recall on pickups issued by GM this year alone and the fifth since the 2014 Silverado and Sierra were released last year. Each of the three previous recalls this year have centered around fire risks with larger recalls coming in January and March and a smaller one issued just two weeks ago.

Even worse for the automaker, this most recent truck recall is part of a larger recall of nearly 2.7 million vehicles, upping the total amount of GM vehicles recalled in 2014 to 11.1 million in the U.S.
