GM recalls 700,000 pickups over power steering defect

2014 Chevrolet Silverado Ltz 063

GM is recalling nearly 700,000 pickups over concerns that the electric power steering assist (EPS) could malfunction and lead to a crash.

Certain 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks are affected by the issue. A temporary loss of EPS assist is possible in these vehicles especially during low-speed turns which increases the risk of a crash, according to GM.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the EPS module software, free of charge.

GM has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-432-8782. GM’s number for this recall is 17276.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.
