Flagger suffers serious head injuries when struck by SUV in Washington work zone

A flagger guiding traffic on a Washington state road was hospitalized with severe head injuries after being hit by an SUV.

According to KIRO-TV, the construction flagger helping control traffic while a fiber optic line was being installed near Issaquah, Washington. The man, who is in his 20s, was in the road directing traffic at about 10:45 a.m. for Diversified Northwest when he was hit by a Jeep Wrangler.

The driver of the Jeep admitted to investigators that he had checked his phone just before the crash, and when he looked back at the road, the flagger was right in front of him. The driver of the Jeep couldn’t break in enough time to avoid the flagger.

The flagger was taken to a nearby hospital with serious head injuries. Neither the driver or his one-year-old passenger were injured.
