The Federal Highway Administration has awarded more than $6.4 million in grants to a tribal government and six states as part of the Accelerated Innovation Deployment Demonstration program.

According to the FHWA, the funds were granted to Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Rhode Island and the Pueblo of Acoma tribal government in New Mexico. The money will go towards improving safety, mobility and project deliverability, and the projects aim to encourage innovative projects across the country.

“We are funding innovative ways to build better and safer roads through projects that will save time, money and lives,”  U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said.

The AID Demonstration program has donated more than $33 million in 45 grants to help agencies across the country embrace innovative traffic, safety and construction practices.

“These state and tribal governments are delivering innovative projects that will inspire others to follow their lead,” Federal Highway Administrator Gregory Nadeau said. “Funding innovations like these in the future is doable, if Congress acts this year and delivers long-term transportation investment.”

The following are the seven agencies and projects awarded the AID Demonstration program grants:

Arizona Department of Transportation and Mohave County: $1,000,000 for a Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil-Integrated Bridge System project on Oatman Highway.

Delaware Department of Transportation: $1,000,000 to update an interchange near Bear into a Diverging Diamond Interchange, which will be the state’s first use of a DDI.

Florida Department of Transportation and Manatee County: $1,000,000 for the installation at 20 signaled intersections on State Route 70 of Adaptive Signal Control technology, which is a strategic intermodal system highway corridor and a designated evacuation route in the event of a hurricane.

Michigan Department of Transportation: $1,000,000 for to build a DDI at the Interstate 96 and Cascade Road project near Grand Rapids. The project will also get to use Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality funds because of the advantages of DDI.
