WESTFIELD, Mass. —Chicago Pneumatic’s new rivet busters are designed with a Controlled Power System (CPS) that prevents blank firing when a unit’s bumpers have worn out, thus extending equipment life, enhancing long-term performance and avoiding unexpected downtime. The rivet busters are ideal in a number of concrete breaking and metal cutting applications.

The new CPS feature automatically prevents damaging blank fires when the rubber bumper is 75-percent worn. At that point the outward movement of the rivet buster’s upper and lower sleeves opens bleeding ports for air, causing the piston to stop in its lower position as air is exhausted above the tool retainer.

On previous models with worn bumpers, the piston’s excess energy would be transmitted into the front end of the cylinder during blank fires, eventually leading to equipment breakage. CPS is designed to protect against this premature wear and subsequently reduce replacement costs for worn or broken upper and lower sleeves.

An indicator groove on the rivet buster’s lower sleeve shows when its rubber bumpers should be replaced. To avoid untimely work stoppages, CPS allows operators to continue working with a worn bumper by applying pressure on the tool against the concrete surface. Blank fires, however, are still prevented.

The new rivet buster models include the CP 4608 and CP 4611, which deliver 8-inch and 11-inch tool strokes, respectively. Both rivet busters require 45 cfm of air for operation. Each model is available with either a D-type ergonomic trigger handle or a pistol handle.

The CPS feature incorporates a teasing throttle for easy operator control of blow rate and blow energy. Additionally, the rivet buster’s swivel can be installed into a new half-inch pipe thread inlet bushing, rather than in the handle.

Other standard features of the rivet busters include a proven Boyer valve for harder hitting, a solid pin in the valve block to eliminate valve misalignment, and a fluorescent band for night crew safety.
