PELLA, Iowa — Vermeer Corporation has introduced a new direct drive attachment for its Terrain Leveler® surface excavation machine (SEM) that provides for a more efficient transfer of power to the cutter head, while reducing moving parts.
The direct drive system features a hydraulic low-speed motor on each side of the SEM cutter head that provides direct drive power to the cutter drum. This design provides a more efficient transfer of power to the cutter drum helping to increase production efficiency.
“The low-speed motors used in the direct drive attachment offer enhanced cutting ability in harder mineral substances and overburden compared to high-speed motors used in competitive machines,” says Chris Lynch with Vermeer Corporation. “This also results in enhanced overall efficiency of the drum cutting process.”
The SEM top-down cutting allows the cutter teeth to gain penetration without using the machine’s tractive effort to drive the teeth into the minerals. As the unit travels forward and the drum rotates, the teeth on top of the drum advance over the top of the mineral surface. As the teeth come down toward the mineral surface, they make contact by impacting the mineral. Operators can also optimize material size.
A patented drum tilt system allows the operator to control grade in both the lateral and longitudinal directions and the unit can dig up to 27 inches (68.6 cm) deep and 12 feet (3.7 m) wide in a single pass.
Extensive field testing of the direct drive attachment on the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM has resulted in up to a 20 percent increase in production. The direct drive attachment is currently available on the T1255 Terrain Leveler surface excavation machine.
