Mack Trucks’ Granite, the Medium Heavy Duty (MHD), model, is designed to meet the needs of customers, like some municipalities, who don’t put severely punish their vocational trucks, “customers for whom a lighter spec gets the job done.” The MHD is equipped with a Cummins ISL9 345 horsepower engine and either an Eaton-Fuller manual or Allison automatic transmission. The truck comes with five axle options, from 12,000- to 23,000-pound capacity. UniMax steer axle hubs are sealed and maintenance free. Mack says the short distance from bumper to tire provides front-end swing clearance, outstanding wheel cuts and an exceptional turning radius. The truck has a galvanized steel cab mounted on air bags and shocks and stabilized with sway bars. Mack also announced that both its Granite Axle Forward and Granite Axle Back models can now be ordered with a 36-inch flat-top sleeper equipped with a 30 by 80-inch mattress, curtain, bunk restraint, under bunk storage and cup holder – as well as rear and side window options. The sleep is not an aftermarket product, it is built on the Mack assembly line.
