New diesel vehicle sales could increase by as much as 10 percent by 2018, according to a report from our sister site, Total Landscape Care [2].

The report is based on the views of a USA Today expert panel, which looked at reasons the spike in diesel vehicle sales may occur.

Some of the leading causes for the influx in sales, the experts say, include:

  • Diesel’s fuel economy, which is 20 percent to 40 percent better than gasoline

  • The “green” factor: Diesel is touted as a more environmentally-friendly choice than gasoline.

  • Recent improvements to diesel vehicles

  • Lower lifetime cost: Diesel vehicle models from 2000 to 2011 typically cost $4,000 to $16,000 less than gasoline vehicles over five years

  • Talk about diesel-electric hybrids, which are already available in select European countries
