A floor collapse of a restaurant being built near the Jourdan River in Mississippi claimed the life of a contractor earlier this month.
According to a report from the Sun Herald, 54-year-old Gary Berthelot, the president of Berthelot Design/Construction Inc. was killed when when a raised deck for a new restaurant overlooking the river collapsed on top of him September 8.
As workers installed concrete atop the deck, Berthelot was standing beneath, the paper reports. By the time rescue workers were able to dig Berthelot from the rubble of the collapse, he had died.
Berthelot’s company was overseeing the construction of the restaurant, which is being built in Kiln on the site of the former Jourdan River Steamer restaurant on Mississippi Highway 603. That restaurant closed in 2012 after sustaining damage in Hurricane Isaac.
