Louisville, Ky., Oct. 6 Caterpillar has added a new, 2.2 liter compact diesel engine to its product offering for the agricultural, construction, turf care, and outdoor power equipment markets.
The new Cat® C2.2 is a 4-cylinder, turbocharged engine with air to air aftercooling rated at 66 bhp (49.2bkW) at 2800 rpm with a peak torque of 153.4 lbf ft (208.4 Nm) at 1800 rpm. The C2.2 occupies only 8.8 ft3 (0.25m3), and weighs 428 lbs (194 kg).
The new C2.2 engine meets existing Tier 3/Stage IIIA emission standards for North America and Europe and is designed as a solid core engine platform to tackle future emissions requirements.
The C2.2 rounds out our line of compact diesels, said Cat marketing manager Mike Reinhart, by filling a niche at the high end of the power spectrum while still offering the benefits of a very light, compact package. It supports the continuing need for fuel-efficient, reliable diesel power in small and mid-size equipment in the construction, agricultural, turf maintenance and outdoor power equipment markets.
It gives our customers the ability to deliver big machine performance in a smaller, more efficient package.
Much of the C2.2™s compact design comes from a new, side-mounted turbocharger and from a redesigned cooling system which permits use of a smaller radiator. Other options aimed at the engine™s target markets include a choice of high or low fan positions, a special low noise fan, and electronic controlled governing.
The new C2.2 engine retains the low cost of ownership features common on all of the engines in Cat™s compact lineup, including a 500-hour service interval, and single-side access for all service functions.
The C2.2 delivers Cat performance and reliability to a new segment of the compact diesel market, Reinhart added. With its combination high power density, light weight, and configuration flexibility we expect it to be very well received.
