The Transportation Research Board (TRB) has named California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Director Malcolm Dougherty as chairman of its executive committee.

Dougherty will begin serving his one-year term in the position Jan. 12, but will first become vice chairman of the executive committee Nov. 29.

Dr. Marcia McNutt, president of the National Academy of Sciences and chair of the National Research Council (of which TRB is a division) approved his nomination.

TRB’s executive committee is the group’s senior policy body and has 25 members appointed by the NRC chairman. The committee advises the NRC chairman and governing board and offers oversight to make sure the TRB’s activities are “appropriate for the NRC and constructive to the transportation system and nation.”

The committee meets twice a year, with the first being held at TRB’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C., in January, and the second in June.
