According to the Ventura County Star, a new sign will be placed declaring a 1.5-mile stretch of Creek Road as the “Adan Lara Memorial Roadway.”
Lara died Oct. 30 when he was directing traffic as Ventura County Transportation Department workers did maintenance on the road near Oak View, California. The 57-year-old man was holding a sign in the road that gave drivers a go-ahead to continue past the work when he was hit by a car that didn’t stop in time despite signs warning of the work ahead. The incident is still being investigated.
The death has prompted Ventura County officials into looking at safer alternatives to workers holding the signs – such as signs that can be controlled remotely to tell drivers when they are clear to continue.
The Ventura County Board of Supervisors said the gesture not only honors the life of Lara, but it also reminds drivers to be careful around road workers.
