The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is in the process of adding sensors along Interstate 17 in the Phoenix area over the next few weeks as part of an overall system to monitor traffic flow across the state.

The data collected by the sensors will be used in estimate travel times displayed on overhead message boards and be used to make decisions on highway improvements by ADOT, the Maricopa Association of Governments and the regional transportation-planning agency.

Similar sensors are already in place in the area, but this project is adding new ones that offer more reliable and advance technologies.

ADOT most recently installed these sensors on I-10, U.S. 60 and State Route 51. Once the current installation process is completed, there will be more than 85 locations on Phoenix highways equipped with the sensors.
