The Arizona Department of Transportation has activated its first LED lighting system in a tunnel at the Queen Creek Tunnel on U.S. 60 east of Superior.

ADOT received a $1 million federal grant to help fund the project.

“The new lighting system improves visibility in the tunnel, which was built in 1952, by using an adaptive control system that will adjust the lighting level based upon ambient light and weather conditions outside,” the agency reports. “It will also save money on electricity and reduce the need for maintenance.”

The tunnel will be closed the night of October 10 through the morning of October 15. ADOT has set up an alternate route connecting with U.S. 60 in Superior and Globe along Arizona 77 and Arizona 177.
