APWA honors 23 Public Works Projects of the Year during congress and expo

The American Public Works Association recognized 23 projects as part of its 2015 Public Works Projects of the Year Award during the groups International Public Works Congress and Exposition in Phoenix.

The awards each year celebrate “the alliance between the managing agency, the contractor, the consultant, and their cooperative achievements.”

Awards are given in five main categories, with a sixth category for small cities and rural communities that are broken out into five subcategories.

Winners in the five main categories include:

Disaster or Emergency Construction/Repair

  • Less than $5 million — Kelley Stand Road, Sunderland, Vermont, four-mile stretch that includes two bridge structures, all of which received extensive damage
  • $25 million to $75 million — SR 530 Landslide Emergency Response and Repair, Snohomish County Public Works and the Washington State Department of Transportation, the project resulted after a massive landslide occurred near the community of Oso in Snohomish County

Environment

  • Less than $5 million — La Jolla Ecological Reserve Low Flow Diversion Project, San Diego, California
  • $5 million to $25 million — Port of Olympia Stormwater Treatment System
  • $25 million to $75 million — Cascades Park
  • More than $75 million — Bay Division Pipeline Reliability Upgrade – Bay Tunnel Project, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission

Historical Restoration/Preservation

  • Less than $5 million — Balch Gulch Bridge at NW Thurman Street Rehabilitation, Portland Bureau of Transportation
  • $5 million to $25 million — Avenida Menendez Seawall

Structures

  • Less than $5 million — Julian Wash Linear Park, Pima County, Arizona
  • $5 million to $25 million — Eloise T. Leveritt Public Works Building, City of Decatur, GA
  • $25 million to $75 million — Pierce County Sewer and Traffic Operations Facility, Pierce County, Washington
  • More than $75 million — Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center, Anaheim, California
  • More than $75 million — Target Field Station, Hennepin County, Minnesota

Transportation

  • Less than $5 million — SW 9th Street at Innovation Square
  • $5 million to $25 million — Bagby Street Reconstruction
  • $5 million to $25 million — Houghton Road, Irvington Road to Valencia Road, Tucson, Arizona
  • $25 million to $75 million — Mercer Corridor Improvements Project
  • More than $75 million — San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge New East Span, California Department of Transportation, Bay Area Toll Authority and the California Transportation Commission
