American Society of Concrete Contractors releases position statement ‘Acceptable Use of Calcium Chloride in Concrete’

St. Louis-based American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC), has published Position Statement No. 31, “Acceptable Use of Calcium Chloride in Concrete, the latest in a series of papers on key issues of interest to cast-in-place concrete contractors, architects and engineers.

The position statement explains that though many specifications prohibit its use, under certain conditions, the use of calcium chloride as an accelerating admixture can be acceptable, economical and beneficial to owners. It can be particularly useful when placing flatwork in cold weather.

“The position papers deal with issues that constantly cause concern for concrete contractors,” says D. Thomas Ruttura, Ruttura & Sons Construction Co., Inc., in a press statement from ASCC. “The better we can explain to designers and specifiers what can and cannot be expected from concrete, the more likely we are to have a successful project. These position statements go a long way towards telling that story.”
