Alabama’s price gouging law goes into effect once the governor has declared a state of emergency.

The law prohibits “unconscionable pricing” of items for sale or rent in the affected area. Under this law, businesses are prohibited from increasing the price of items for sale or rent by 25% or more above the average price charged in the same area within the past 30 days.

Consumers who observe price increases of 25% or more following a natural disaster are urged to contact the Alabama Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-392-5658. Have the following information when placing the call: business name, business address, product (gas, ice, hotel), price, date and time price was charged, and the consumer’s contact information.
