10 construction workers injured in collapse of 91 Freeway bridge near LA

An onramp bridge under construction collapsed on the 91 Freeway in Corona, California, injuring 10 construction workers October 9, according to the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC). The work is part of the overall 91 Project.

Jacking equipment failed while workers were lowering a section of the bridge on East Grand Boulevard, causing the deck to drop and hit support beams. These beams then hit the workers, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times.

The commission suspended work over the weekend and closed East Grand Boulevard until Monday.

“RCTC is dedicated to the safety of the 91 Project and the men and women who are making these infrastructure improvements,” RCTC Executive Director Anne Mayer said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with these workers and their families.”

“We greatly appreciate the outpouring of well wishes from the public for our injured crew members. Please keep those positive messages flowing through social media, #91bridgeupdate and #sr91project,” Mayer added.
